Moving Sidewalk / Poem

Moving Sidewalk

How do you describe

what it means to grieve a loss-

pulled by a force not your own

through a world that insists

on proceeding as usual?

I’m not sure I can tell you,

but I’ll give it a try.

Have you ever been on the moving sidewalk

in the airport, gliding along alone-

and you hear the sounds around you,

and slowly pass people at their gates,

others walk beside this sidewalk at a different pace,

some laughing, some silent, but all far away?

And you’re there, in the same place

passing through at a different speed

all the sounds meshing together

in one indecipherable sound.

You see…that’s grief.

We keep moving toward the next thing in front of us,

making the best decisions we can

filled with hope that we won’t feel this way forever-

and, thankfully, hope is a powerful thing.
